Car Service Tips

We all depend on our cars to take us to work, school and to run errands with and as a result it can be very stressful when our autos break down. Not only can be it very expensive to receive car service but we've all heard stories of people getting fleeced and getting overcharged for procedures that were not even needed in the first place. Not all auto mechanics are unscrupulous; there are many who are honest and provide excellent service. It's important to find a car repair business that you can trust. If you don't have one, you may consider asking references from your co-workers, friends or family. It's a good sign when a business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and employs certified technicians. It's always good to find a place that you feel comfortable with that you can turn to for routine maintenance and for more complicated issues.
In order to prevent unexpected expenses, always ask for a written estimate beforehand. Ask questions if you don't understand the estimate or if anything looks vague. Don't forget to ask if they will use refurbished or new parts. Also tell the technicians not to perform any services without your permission or else you might end up with a huge bill. Comparison shopping is also a good idea; call various businesses for an estimate and use that as bargaining power if necessary. Many expensive parts are often covered under warranty so always find out if it's still covered by contacting the dealership.
Read over the owners manual of your auto and don't forget the routine check ups and maintenance such as oil changes. You can use an agenda or smart phone to help remind you of when to take care of these procedures. Other items which may need to be maintained regularly include tires, coolant fluid, spark plugs and air filters.
If you have doubts, once thing you can do is ask for the old part back if a technician says he is going to have to replace it. This way you can make sure that they are actually replacing it and not charging you for no reason. Most places will inform you if there are any malfunctions with your vehicle; this is customary. However, it’s never a good sign if you feel like you’re being pressured to get a ton of other stuff fixed right on the spot. Also, make sure that you are aware of the costs of a diagnostic test. Some car service shops may perform this test for free while others do not. Diagnostic tests can be quite expensive and add quite a sum to the bill.
Getting your car serviced is a necessary evil; we don't enjoy it but we all gotta do it some time. Finding a car repair business you trust is the key and will help keep your vehicle running for a long time.
